Suguri started to skate in Alaska, where her father, an international pilot, was working. Suguri was the first lady from Japan to win an ISU Championship (2001 Four Continents) since Yuka Sato won the Worlds in 1994. Her younger sister Chika was a competitive figure skater and competed at the international level as well. Suguri switched coaches following the 2008/09 season and moved to Russia. Suguri debuted at World Championships in 1997.
