Fontana was born in the USA but grew up in Italy. Her father built an ice rink for her in Italy. Later, she moved back
to the USA to train there. She retired from competitive skating in 2002 and decided to come back for the 2006
Olympic Games in her home country. Fontana is married to former U.S. pair skater John Zimmerman.
