In 2005, Lambiel became the first Swiss man to win Worlds in 48 years. (Hans Gerschwiler was the 1947 World Champion). Lambiel decided to sit out the 2007 European Championships. Lambiel retired from competitive skating in October 2008 due to injury problems, but decided to come back in summer 2009.
