Phaneuf won the silver medal at the first international senior event she entered, the 2004 Four Continent Championships. She sat out the 2005/2006 season recovering from injuries but came back for the 2007 National Championships. Phaneuf switched coaches end of 2011 and moved to Toronto to train under Orser, the two-time Olympic silver medalist.
