Oda is the 17th descendant of Nobunaga Oda (1534-1582), the famous Japanese war lord during the age of the civil war. His mother is part of his coaching team. Oda got married to his girlfriend Mayu in spring 2010 and their son Shintaro was born in October 2010. Oda switched coaches following the 2010 World Championships and went back to former coach Lee Barkell.
