Carriere began skating at age 5 following his older sister Christine and after watching the 1994 Olympic Winter Games with Nancy Kerrigan, who was from his local area in Massachusetts. He has skated in some shows with Kerrigan. His cousin Caroline Hallisey was a U.S. speedskater who competed at the 1998 and 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
