Flatt began skating at age 4. Her father took her to shop for a birthday gift for her grandfather, and they came home with skating lessons instead of a gift. She skated pairs with Andrew Speroff from 2001 to 2004. Her grandfather was a national fencing champion. Flatt is a spokesperson for "Reading is Fundamental" the largest non-profit reading organization in the USA. Flatt has been accepted into Stanford University. She switched coaches in spring 2011 and moved to California for studying and training.
