Baldé started to skate because his mother was a competitive figure skater in her early teens and loved the sport. She is from Russia and his father is from Guinea. The family emigrated from Russia to Canada in 1992. Baldé is fluent in Russian. He missed most of the 2010/11 season because of injury. Balde switched coaches and moved back to Canada in 2015 after training in Detroit since end of 2011.
