Righini competed for Russia at the international level under the name Ivan Bariev until fall 2012. He switched coaches in September 2014 and has moved to Germany for training. His nickname is "gypsy king". His brother Filip (ten years younger) was an ice dancer but now has switched to basketball. Righini also lists Daniil Gleikhengauz as his choreographer.
