Gachinski got roller blades when he was six years old but soon switched to figure skating. He moved with his family from Moscow to St. Petersburg to train under Alexei Mishin as a nine-year-old. His idol in skating is 2006 Olympic Champion Evgeni Plushenko, who is also a student of Mishin.
