Dobbs started skating around age 3 after seeing Michelle Kwan perform at an ice show. She competed in pairs with Joseph Jacobsen and finished 7th at the 2010 U.S. Nationals. She also competed in pairs from 2004-2006 at the juvenile and novice level with Christopher Trefil. Her mother competed at the Junior National level as a swimmer, and her brother is a competitve swimmer. Her uncle played professional baseball for the Texas Rangers. An athlete she looks up to is swimmer Michael Phelps. Coach Todd Sand is a three-time World medallist in Pair Skating (with Jenni Meno).
