Miner started playing ice hockey around age four but then took up figure skating after watching figure skating lessons as he liked jumping and spinning. He continued to play hockey until he was 12. His idol in skating is 1988 Olympic Champion Brian Boitano. Coaches Peter Johansson (from Sweden) and Mark Mitchell competed at the World level.
