Gao began skating at age 7 because her parents signed her up for learn-to-skate classes. Her father was a junior national badminton champion in China. The skater she looks up to the most is 2010 Olympic Champion Yu-Na Kim (KOR). Gao switched coaches and moved back from Canada to the USA following the 2011/12 season as she started studying at Harvard University.
