Gao began skating at age 7 because her parents signed her up for learn-to-skate classes. Her father was a junior national badminton champion in China. The skater she looks up to the most is 2010 Olympic Champion Yu-Na Kim (KOR). Gao has moved to Canada and trains together with Kim. Coach Brian Orser (CAN) is the 1984 and 1988 Olympic silver medalist.
