Martinez started skating in 2005 after discovering the sport in a shopping mall ice rink. He started to skate competitively in 2008. He is the first skater from the Philippines to compete at the Olympic Winter Games (in 2014) and the first to perform a triple Axel in competition. He looks up to Patrick Chan (CAN), Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN) and Yuna Kim (KOR).
