Chock/Bates teamed up in spring 2011. They both were World Junior Champions with their previous partners: Chock in 2009 with Greg Zuerlein and Bates in 2008 with Emily Samuelson. Zuerlein retired from skating in spring 2011. Bates sat out the 2010/11 season recovering from a lacerated achilles tendon and then split up with long-time partner Samuelson.
