Hawker, who is the oldest of ten children in her family, began skating at the age of six when her mother signed her up for lessons. She started competing at the age of 15, after she landed her first double Axel. She was a competitive soccer player as well. Hawker is working as a waitress to finance her skating. She got married to long-time boyfriend Jamie Doherty in June 2006.
