Kolyada is the oldest of four children in his family. He fractured his right ankle in August 2014 and sat out the 2014/15 season recovering from his injury. He had two withdraw from the 2014 National Championships during the Free Skating as a hook on his skating boot had come off. Kolyada has also worked with Stephane Lambiel on his 2016/17 programs. He is the first Russian skater to perform a quadruple Lutz in international competition (2017 Ondrej Nepela Trophy).
