Tennell is a bronze medalist in the Team Event at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. She has two younger brothers, Austin and Shane, who are both hockey players. She switched coaches following the 2019/20 season. She sat out the entire 2021/22 sesaon recovering from foot injuries and then most of the 2023/24 season after breaking her ankle on end of October 2023. She switched coaches and moved to France in 2022 for a year and now trains most of the time alone in New Jersey and works with her coaches online.
