Malinin is the first skater to have successfully performed a quadruple Axel in competition (2022 U.S. Figure Skating Classic). He is coached by his parents, who were competitive figure skaters, representing Uzbekistan. His mother Tatiana is the 1999 ISU Four Continents and Grand Prix Final Champion. His younger sister Lisa is a figure skater as well.
